Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about personality frameworks, the assessment, and how Know Thy Type works.

About the Quiz / Assessment

How long does the assessment take?

The assessment takes about 10-15 minutes with around 80 questions. Each question scores across multiple personality frameworks at once, so you get results for MBTI, Enneagram, Big Five, Attachment Style, and Big 5 Emotions from a single sitting.

Is this a real personality test or just for fun?

Our assessment is grounded in real psychometric research. Every question is designed using established correlations between personality frameworks, so each response gives signal across the Big Five, MBTI, Enneagram, and Attachment dimensions simultaneously. You can read more about our convergent approach on the Methodology page.

Can I retake the quiz if I don't agree with my results?

Yes, you can retake it as many times as you like. Your personality can show up differently depending on your mood, stress level, or where you are in life. If results feel off, try again in a different headspace. We are also building a deeper 216-question assessment for those who want maximum precision across every framework.

What makes this different from 16Personalities or other free tests?

Most sites test one framework in isolation. Know Thy Type scores you across MBTI, Enneagram, Big Five, Attachment Style, and our Big 5 Emotions framework in a single sitting, then shows you how they all connect. That cross-framework view is what makes your results actually useful.

Do I need to create an account?

You can take the quiz without an account. Creating a free account lets you save your results, revisit them later, and access your full personality profile from any device.

MBTI

What is MBTI and how does it work?

MBTI stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It sorts people into 16 personality types based on four preferences: where you get energy (Extraversion vs. Introversion), how you take in information (Sensing vs. Intuition), how you make decisions (Thinking vs. Feeling), and how you structure your life (Judging vs. Perceiving).

Can my MBTI type change over time?

Your core preferences stay stable, but how strongly you lean toward each can shift with age and life experience. Someone who tested as a slight Introvert at 20 might test closer to the middle at 40. Big life events like career changes or parenthood can also shift your expression of type.

What is the rarest MBTI type?

INFJ is the rarest type, making up roughly 1.5% of the population. It is also the most searched personality type on Google. The four rarest types (INFJ, ENTJ, INTJ, ENFJ) together account for less than 8% of people. The most common type is ISFJ at about 14%.

Is MBTI scientifically valid?

MBTI has mixed standing in academic psychology. Critics point out it was built on Carl Jung's theories rather than empirical data. That said, modern research shows strong correlations between MBTI dimensions and the Big Five, which is the gold standard in personality science. Our approach maps MBTI through Big Five data for greater accuracy. See our Methodology page for details.

Enneagram

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram describes nine personality types based on your core motivation - the deep drive that shapes how you see the world. Unlike MBTI, which focuses on how you think and process, the Enneagram focuses on why you do what you do. Each type has a core fear, a core desire, and characteristic patterns of growth and stress.

Can I be more than one Enneagram type?

You have one core type, but you will see parts of yourself in several types. Your "wing" (one of the two types next to yours on the Enneagram circle) adds a secondary flavor to your personality. You also connect to two other types through your growth and stress lines. So while your core stays the same, your full Enneagram profile has layers.

What are wings and arrows in the Enneagram?

Wings are the two types adjacent to your core type on the Enneagram circle. Most people lean toward one wing more than the other, and it shades how your core type shows up. Arrows (also called lines or paths) connect you to two other types - one that surfaces when you are growing and one that appears under stress.

Is one Enneagram type better than another?

No. There is no hierarchy. Every type has distinct strengths and blind spots. A healthy Type 8 and a healthy Type 2 both bring enormous value, just in very different ways. The Enneagram is about understanding your patterns, not ranking them.

Attachment Styles

What are the four attachment styles?

Secure, Anxious-Preoccupied, Dismissive-Avoidant, and Fearful-Avoidant. Secure individuals are comfortable with closeness and independence. Anxious types crave intimacy but worry about rejection. Dismissive types value self-reliance and keep emotional distance. Fearful-Avoidant types swing between wanting closeness and pulling away.

Where does my attachment style come from?

Attachment style develops in early childhood based on how your caregivers responded to your needs. Consistent, responsive caregiving produces secure attachment. Inconsistent or neglectful caregiving can lead to insecure patterns. But your childhood style is not your destiny.

Can I change my attachment style?

Yes. Research on neuroplasticity shows that attachment patterns can shift through self-awareness, therapy, and healthy relationships. Many people move from insecure to "earned secure" attachment over time. The first step is understanding your current pattern, which is exactly what our assessment helps with.

How does attachment style affect my relationships?

Your attachment style shapes how you handle conflict, express needs, respond to closeness, and react when your partner pulls away. Knowing your style (and your partner's) can explain recurring patterns that feel confusing or frustrating, and give you a concrete path to healthier dynamics. Explore attachment compatibility to see how styles interact.

Cross-Framework / How They Work Together

Why combine multiple personality frameworks?

Each framework captures a different slice of who you are. MBTI maps cognition, Enneagram maps motivation, Big Five maps traits, and Attachment maps relational patterns. Alone, each gives a partial picture. Together, they create a layered profile that explains not just what you do, but why you do it and how it plays out in relationships. Explore these connections through Personality Alchemy.

What are the Big 5 Emotions (B5E)?

B5E is our proprietary framework that identifies five core emotional patterns - Fear, Shame, Resentment, Grief, and Guilt - that run beneath your personality type. These are not disorders or diagnoses. They are universal human experiences that, when understood, unlock deeper self-awareness than cognitive typing alone can offer.

Do these frameworks ever contradict each other?

They can appear to, but that usually reveals something interesting. An ENTJ (decisive, commanding) who is also Enneagram Type 2 (driven to help others) might seem contradictory, but in practice it describes someone who leads through service. Those tension points are where the most useful personal insights live. See the ENTJ + Type 2 profile for an example.

About Know Thy Type

Who is behind Know Thy Type?

Know Thy Type is built by Jon, a student of history, psychology, and contemplative traditions. It started as a passion project to help people understand themselves more deeply, not just through a single personality label, but through the emotional patterns that drive everything underneath. You can read more in his letter from the author.

Is this site a substitute for therapy or professional assessment?

No. Know Thy Type is an educational resource, not a clinical tool. Our content is informational and observational, never diagnostic. If you are experiencing mental health challenges, we encourage you to work with a licensed professional. Personality frameworks are tools for self-understanding, not medical instruments.
